BURRELL TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — There are new developments today in a case of suspected child abuse in Indiana County.

A 20-month-old boy, who has not been identified, was hospitalized Friday morning after officials say he suffered life-threatening injuries at a home in the Chestnut Ridge public housing complex in Burrell Township.

According to a report in the Indiana Gazette, the husband of the boy’s mother is now facing charges in the case.

The Indiana Gazette reports Juan Campbell is charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment. His bail was set at $150,000.

He is not the child’s biological father.

Police served a search warrant Friday afternoon at the residence on Susan Drive near Blairsville.

Earlier that morning, the boy was at home when calls came into 911 about a child not breathing just after 2:30 a.m.

The boy’s mother was not home at time. She was in the hospital after having another child.

The boy remains in critical condition at Children’s Hospital today, the Indiana Gazette reports.

According to court papers, a doctor wrote that if the child dies, his death should be treated as a homicide.
